Jim J. Zbornik

Jim J. Zbornik, 67 of Charles City died Friday, October 21, 2011, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Jim Zbornik will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor David Werges of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday an hour prior to the service.

Jim Joseph Zbornik was born November 30, 1943, in Florence, Ala., the son of Thomas and Frances (Salsbury) Zbornik. He graduated from Saint John’s Military Academy in 1961 and later received his Bachelors Degree in Biology from Augustana College. Jim served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. After his discharge Jim was employed as the Southeast Territorial Sales Manager for Salsbury Laboratories. He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church and V.F.W. His interests included deep sea fishing, farming and traveling. Jim was dedicated to family and community.

Living family members include two daughters, Erica Zbornik of Indiana and Alisa Zbornik of Charles City; a sister, Tiena (Jerry) Zbornik of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Tom Zbornik of Evanston, Wyo.; and a niece, Tayler Zbornik of Alpine, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and paternal and maternal grandparents.

Erin Heffron

Erin Heffron, 35, of Rudd, died Thursday, October 20, 2011, as the result of an automobile accident.

Memorial services for Erin Heffron will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends at the church an hour prior to the service.

Erin Lorraine Heffron was born July 8, 1976, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Roger and Judith (Strauser) Heffron. She attended Charles City High School and later received her GED. Erin then received her degree in cosmetology from LaJames Cosmetology College and her Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Kaplan University. On July 6, 1999, she married Bradley Latch. They later divorced. Erin was manager of Fantastic Sams in Mason City. She always enjoyed playing a game of pool. Erin always looked forward to spending time with family and friends. She will be remembered as a dedicated mother that loved her children very much.

Living family members include two daughters, Alexis Latch and Allison Pommrehn both of Rudd; her mother, Judith Heffron of Charles City; a brother, Michael (Tammy) Heffron of Charles City; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents; and her father.

Dale L. Chestek

Dale L. Chestek, age 75 of Charles City died Thursday, October 20, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dale Chestek will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3–6 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Dale Leland Chestek was born February 11, 1936 in Charles City, the son of Leland and Helen (Sturdivant) Chestek. He grew up in rural Colwell and graduated from Colwell Consolidated School in 1953. In 1957, he was united in marriage to Sharon Kruse. The couple later divorced. On March 25, 1966, he married Ruth Hovey-Bass in Charles City. Dale worked as a farmer and shelled corn. He later went to work for Pyle and Tinus Construction in Charles City. In 1985, the couple moved to Texas where he worked construction and then went to work for the State of Texas as a prison guard. The couple returned to Iowa in 1996, where he was currently working as an independent contractor. Carpentry was Dale’s passion in life. He held membership at the Moose Lodge while living in Texas.

Living family members include his wife of 45 years, Ruth Chestek of Charles City; two daughters, Julie and Jill; a son, Dean Chestek (Dawn Sowell) of Copperas Cove, Tex.; three step-children, Karen (David) Youngerman, James (Penny) Bass both of Charles City, Dennis (Lisa) Bass, of Belton, Tex.; two grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; two step-great-great grandchildren; a brother Gordon (Sue) Chestek of Colo.; a sister, Barbara (Alan) Meints of Clear Lake; a brother-in-law, George (LuJayne) Hovey of Houston, Tex.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Hovey and Katherine Hovey both of Charles City; two special friends, Donna Meyer and Tammy Roney both of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Alan; a step-grandson, Scott Bass; three brothers-in-law, Glen Hovey, Kenneth Hovey, and Raymond Hovey.

Audrey Gies

Audrey Gies, 89, of Riceville, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services for Audrey Gies will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Saratoga Presbyterian Church in Saratoga. Pastor Tim Sir will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Saratoga Cemetery.

Audrey Mae Warehime Staley Gies was born May 17, 1922, south of Riceville on her grandparents farm, the daughter of Charles and Elise (Wendorff) Warehime. She received her education at Riceville. On August 26, 1941 she was united in marriage to Jesse Staley. Jesse died in 1967. Audrey married William Gies on September 17, 1968. They moved to Charles City in 1974 and to Riceville in 2000. William died on February 3, 2007. She was a member of the Saratoga Presbyterian Church. Her interests included dancing, camping, and doing needlework including crocheting pot holders. Audrey and William also spent 30 years wintering in Texas.

Living family members include a daughter, Carol Hereid of Horicon, Wis.; and two grandchildren, Kristin Hereid and Gregg Hereid.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and a son-in-law, Larry Hereid.

Marguerite Patterson

Marguerite Patterson, 97, of Charles City, died Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Marguerite Patterson will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday where the Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Marguerite Mary Anderson Patterson was born January 28, 1914, at Chicago, Ill., the daughter of William and Mae (Melody) Anderson. She graduated from Austin High School in Chicago. On June 30, 1934, she was united in marriage to Colin “Pat” Patterson at Elmwood Park, Ill. In 1950 they moved to Charles City where they owned and operated Patterson Oil Company for 20 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Saint Anthony Circle and City Improvement. Her interests included reading, knitting and playing Bridge. Family was very important to Marguerite and she looked forward to spending time with them.

Living family members include two sons, Wayne (Marion) Patterson of Carlsbad, Calif. and Gary Patterson of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; five grandchildren; Julie (Patrick) Lathrop, Audrey (Richard) John, Chris (Raylaine) Patterson, Heather (Sam) Hanson and Jonathon (Liz) Patterson; and 9 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on August 13, 1991; and a sister, Jeanne Jordt.

Elaine Schreier

Elaine Schreier, 80, of Charles City, died Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elaine Schreier will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Elaine Jean Soli Schreier was born October 22, 1930, Vang, N.D. the third child of George and Ruth (Kjennrude) Soli. She graduated as valedictorian from Milton High School, Milton N.D. in 1948. She moved to Chicago in July of that same year and began employment as a receptionist with the Standard Oil Company. While living in Chicago she discovered a fondness for baseball and the Chicago Cubs which lasted all of her life. In 1953 she moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. worked at an employment agency. While there she met and married Adam Eugene “Gene” Schreier on August 6, 1954. They moved to Des Moines in 1956 settling in Charles City in August of 1957. Her interests included cooking, baking, watching various sports, listening to Country Western music, reading and bird watching. Elaine always looked forward to sharing her life with her family, especially her grandchildren. She really appreciated the laughs, luncheons and good times with many wonderful friends.

Living family members include her husband, Gene Schreier of Charles City; four children, Michael (Victoria) Schreier of Lexington, Ky., Teresa (David) Bennett of Cedar Rapids, Lance Schreier of Charles City and Timothy Schreier of Hoboken, N.J.; two grandchildren, Travis and Ryan Bennett; three brothers, Allan (Marge) Soli of Rapid City, S.D., Charles (Charlotte) Soli of Langdon, N.D. and Gene (Mary Ann) Soli of Milton, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Marietta (Stan) Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Doris McCloud Hanson.

Vernon “Vern” Kluwe

Vernon “Vern” Kluwe, 85, of Charles City, died Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at 9^th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Vern Kluwe will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Vernon Duane Kluwe was born July 22, 1926, at Calmar, the son of Benjamin and Agnes (Phillips) Kluwe. He graduated from Charles City High School. On June 13, 1964, he was united in marriage to Suzanne Sobolik. Vern worked for many years at Birum Olson Motor Company in Mason City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Other memberships included the New Hampton and Greene Country Clubs and a lifetime membership at the Moose Lodge. Vern enjoyed golfing, gardening, selling cars and for 20 years fishing in Canada.

Living family members include his wife, Suzanne “Sue” Kluwe of Charles City; and a daughter Pam (Duane) Folz of Floyd.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Deloris Godowski and Audrey Cenek; and two brothers, Benjamin Kluwe, Jr. and Robert Kluwe.
