Richard “Dick” Young


Richard “Dick” Young, age 67 of Charles City died Saturday, November 12, 2011, in Hickory Hills Woods near Bassett.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, from 3 - 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Richard Glen Young was born November 21, 1943, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Glen and Eva (Roethler) Young. He received his education in Charles City, graduating in 1962.

On August 23, 1964, at First Congregational Church in Charles City, he was united in marriage to Kay Perrin. To this union, two children were born. Dick and Kay were lifelong residents of Charles City. He worked construction for Bud Moltz, and started Young Construction, LTD. after Bud’s retirement. He owned and operated the company with his wife until the time of his death. Dick was an avid deer and turkey hunter. He captured many wildlife photos on his trail cameras and loved sharing them with his friends and family. He maintained a very large garden. The family spent many weekends camping, having bonfires, fishing, and hunting in the woods. Dick enjoyed ballroom dancing with Kay, performing magic tricks, clowning, and listening to his favorite gospel musicians The Gaithers and Lynda Randle.

Living family members include his wife of 47 years, Kay; two children, Brian (Heidi) Young of Ionia, Jill (Bill) Eckenrod of Waverly; four grandchildren, Jordan, Jacob, Haley, and Trey; two sisters, Betty Attleson of Rochester, Minn., Mary (Joe) Koenigsfeld of Dakota City, Nebr.; a brother, Bill (Shirley) Young of Gladbrook; a sister-in-law, Julie Young of Oakland, Nebr.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his parents; a granddaughter in infancy, Faith Eckenrod; and a brother, Don.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Floyd County Museum, 500 Gilbert Street, Charles City, Iowa 50616.

Lila Funk


Lila Funk, 83, of Charles City, died Friday, November 4, 2011, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Lila Funk will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Jason Boyd of Faith Bible Chapel will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and an hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Lila Mae Land Funk was born May 20, 1928, in Chickasaw County, the daughter of Clayton and Laura (Myli) Land. She received her education from rural schools near Northwood. On January 4, 1946, she married Gilman Sanden. Gilman died in March of 1950. Lila married Milfred Leidal on February 29, 1952 and they later divorced. On October 13, 1956, she was united in marriage to Fred Funk. Fred died on August 8, 1990. Lila worked as a Nurse Aide at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home for over 20 years. She was a member of Faith Bible Chapel where she taught Sunday School for many years. Lila had also served as a Cub Scout leader and Foster Grandparent for several years.

Living family members include five children, Loretta Starkey of Charles City, Russell Sanden of Gordonsville, Minn., Tim (Vicki) Leidal of Charles City, Tom Leidal of Osage and Carol (John) Hermsdorf of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Kimberly Starkey, Travis Sanden, Trena (Jeff) Bulau, Tracie Sanden and fiancé Rich Roberts, Tara Sanden and special friend Tony Hagen, Adam (Jen) Leidal, Lucas Leidal and fiancée Hannah Parks, Michael (Elisha) Schuchhardt and Lauren (Frankie) LaMon; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Harry (Mary) Land of Swisher; three sisters, Luan Sallee and Lily (Johnny) Anderson both of Albert Lea, Minn. and Caroline Kalvig of Northwood; and a brother-in-law, Roger Christiansen of Lake Mills.


She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a daughter, Cathy Funk; a son-in-law, Larry Starkey; a granddaughter, Sherry Starkey; a brother, Andrew Land; and a sister, Frances Christiansen.
