Betty J. Grossmann, 86, formerly of Charles City, now from 2400 West Acacia Ave., Hemet, California, who died July 5, 2011 at The Village Assisted Living Center.

Irene Stohr

Irene Stohr, 88, of El Cajon, Calif., formerly of Charles City, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at Grossmont Hospital in Le Mesa, Calif.

Funeral services for Irene Stohr will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home an hour prior to the service.

Irene Heckman Stohr was born April 11, 1923, at Shell Rock, the daughter of Harry and Myrtle (Dearth) Heckman. She graduated from Cedar Rapids and Iowa Business College. On August 8, 1943, she was united in marriage to Richard Stohr at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. While living in Charles City she was employed at Northwestern Bell Company and Salsbury Laboratories and after moving to El Cajon she worked at Carpenter Technology. She was a very active member of the First Lutheran Church and held various positions in the church.

Living family members include a daughter, Sharon (Martin) Vance of Bella Vista, Ark.; a son, Richard (Ellen) Stohr, Jr. of Big Bear City, Calif.; two grandsons, Martin Vance, Jr. and Joseph Vance; a granddaughter, Michelle Stohr, and a great granddaughter, Shelby Stohr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother and three sisters.

Jack F. McClain, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in Anaheim, CA.

Funeral services for Jack McClain will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of the Colwell United Church of Christ and Jordan River will officiate. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Promise City Cemetery, Promise City. Pastor Linda Reida of the Seymour United Methodist Church will officiate.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jack Floyd McClain was born September 14, 1927, in Decatur County, the son of Everett F. and Hada Etta (Landrum) McClain. From August 30, 1945 to August 13, 1946, he served in the United States Navy. In 1947, he was united in marriage to Norma Lee McMurry in Promise City. Norma Lee died on February 9, 1950. He later married Donna Head and they later divorced. On August 11, 1993, he was united in marriage to Sheilah Dedrickson in Rapid City, S.D. In 1978, after leasing to various trucking companies over the years, Jack applied for and received his own authority to own and operate his own truck. He was a member of the NRA, EAA and OOIDA. His interests included motorcycling, going to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Oshkosh Air Show, flying, keeping in touch with friends, feeding wild animals, raising miniature donkeys and goats; mentoring young men and spoiling his step-grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Sheilah McClain of Charles City; two daughters, Patty (Mark) Roman of Tel Aviv, Israel and Bonnie (Ralph) Stein of Dallas, Texas; two step-sons, Sean (Leah) Dedrickson of Manitou Springs, Colo. and Christopher Dedrickson (Angela Finholt) of Lakeland, Minn.; two grandchildren, Maya Roman and Alexandra Stein; five step-grandchildren, Kelly and Ian Dedrickson, Samantha Dedrickson and Andrea and Tony Finholt; three sisters, Ann Clubb of Washington, Mich., Grace McClain of Sunrise, Fla. and Lucille “Dickie” Bartlett of Seymour; brother, Charles McClain of Promise City; two sisters-in-law, Ethelyn McClain of Des Moines and Velma McClain Evans of Promise City; many nieces and nephews and devoted traveling companion, Sammy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma Lee; son, Dale McClain; sister, Mary Louise Millikin; four brothers, two in infancy, Billy and Bobby and Nate and Dean McClain.
