Robert J. (Bob) Eggert

Robert J. (Bob) Eggert, 88, passed away on February 28, 2010 at the Floyd County Medical Center. He was born on December 4, 1922, the son of Alfred R. Eggert and Martha E. (Allert) Eggert. Robert graduated from Charles City High School. In June 1942, he married Maxine Core. After service in the Pacific Theater during WWII, he graduated from the University of Iowa Law School in January 1948. In March of 1948, Robert was admitted to the bar and joined his father in a law firm originally established in 1877 by his grandfather. He practiced law for 62 years.

The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel selected Robert as a member, an honor that recognized his competency, integrity and commitment to the legal profession. He was a member of the Floyd County, Iowa State, and American Bar Associations.

Robert was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving as President of the Church council on two separate occasions.

Throughout his life, Robert was active in community affairs, serving on numerous boards and commissions, including the Family YMCA, the Charles City Library Foundation, and the St. Charles Cemetery Association. In 1957 he became a director of the Citizens National Bank. In 1973, he also became a director of First Citizens Financial Corporation, retiring from both boards in 2006. He was twice honored by First Citizens National Bank for his dedication and service.

He is preceded in death by daughter Barbara Eggert Hansen. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Maxine of Charles City; daughter, Karen Eggert Paget of Emeryville, Ca; four grandchildren, Tim Enwall of Boulder, Co; Nicholas Paget of Spokane, Wa; Kemmie Paget Barnes of San Diego, Ca; Teri Hansen Keeler of Niwot, Co; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on April 8, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to St. John Lutheran Church; the YMCA Foundation; the Charles City Library Foundation; or the charity of their choice.

Gloria A. Young

Gloria A. Young, 59, of Charles City, died Saturday morning, February 26, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Gloria Young will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Sister M. Diana Blong, PBVM, Pastoral Associate of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation is 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Gloria Ann White was born March 4, 1951, in Charles City, the daughter of Robert and Bernice (Backer) White. She attended school in Charles City and Mason City. On July 21, 1973, she was united in marriage to Robert Young at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Her interests included camping, garage sales, Bingo and going to casinos. Gloria loved everyone’s children and at one time or another raised all of her nieces and nephews.

Living family members include her two sons, Robert Young and Christopher Young both of Charles City; two grandchildren, Alex Young and Lakasha Hutchinson both of Charles City; three brothers, Thomas (Kathy) White of Nevada, Mo., Robert (Edna) White of Floyd and John (Elizabeth) White of Floyd; and sister, Mary (Rick) Nauman of Floyd.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; parents; husband; sister, Theresa White.

Rowena H. “Weng” Lemke

Rowena H. “Weng” Lemke, 39, of Charles City, died Monday afternoon, February 21, 2011, at her home.

A funeral Mass for Rowena Lemke will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Rowena Hernandez was born May 20, 1971, in the Philippines, the daughter of Renato G. and Adelaida (Dayrit) Hernandez. She received her education in the Philippines and from NIACC in Charles City. Rowena was employed as a CNA at the Governmental Hospital in the Philippines and 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. On November 9, 2006, she was united to Barth “BJ” Lemke in the Philippines and on March 9, 2009, in Charles City. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Filipino Community. Rowena enjoyed collecting angels, cooking, visiting the church and spending time with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Barth “BJ” Lemke; two children, Rocel “Gunz” Lemke and Andy “AJ” Lemke all of Charles City; father, Renato Hernandez of the Philippines; four sisters, Rosalie (Boy) Hernandez, Raquel (Kumfu) Valerio, Remie (Jonix) Lacson and Rossel Hernandez all of the Philippines; two brothers, Rommel (Carol) Hernandez of Saudi Arabia and Reniel (Cindy) Hernandez of the Philippines; and many aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; mother; and two brothers, Renato Hernandez, Jr. and Rodel Hernandez.

Shirley R. Begemann

Shirley R. Begemann, 74, of Charles City, died Sunday, February 20, 2011, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Shirley Begemann will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Shirley Rose Albertson Begemann was born January 7, 1937, in Bonair, the daughter of Theodore and Irene (Brooks) Albertson. She graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1954. Shirley worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo from 1954 to 1960. On July 23, 1960, she was united in marriage to Harold Begemann at Waterloo. They farmed south of Charles City until they retired and moved to Charles City in 1994. Her interests included baking, bowling, doing puzzles, reading, golfing and going on two mile walks. Shirley was a Hawkeye fan but also enjoyed the Cyclones as well. She always looked forward to hosting holiday dinners. Spending time with family was always important to Shirley and she looked forward to attending the sporting events that the grandchildren were in.

Living family members include her husband of 50 years, Harold Begemann of Charles City; two sons, Craig (Julie) Begemann and Denny (Kim) Begemann both of Charles City; four grandchildren, Lindsey (Brian) Mullenbach, Lauren (Caleb Lunderg) Begemann, and Alexandra and Ryan Begemann; a great grandson, Carson Mullenbach; and a sister, Doris (Gene) Bard of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step father, Wayne Smith; three brothers, Thomas, Kenneth and Edward Albertson; and a sister, Esther Albertson.

Eileen Heitman

Eileen Heitman, 91, of Charles City, died Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Elizabeth DeVore

Elizabeth Blanch Weaver DeVore formerly of Charles City, died February 15, 2011 in Savoy, Texas.

She was born August 28, 1917 in the township of Grant, IA. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Norville DeVore in 1966, her parents, David and Edith Weaver, five sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by her children Phyllis Gilsdorf, St. Petersburg, Florida; James (Andrea) DeVore, Charles City; Steve (Dorthea) DeVore, Sherman, Texas; Rosalie (Paul) Hagarty, Bellevue, Nebraska; and David (Marcia) DeVore, Edwards, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, one sister, Betty (Merlin) Holland; one brother, Howard (Lorraine) Weaver, sister in law, Marjorie (Robert) DeBolt of Charles City; brothers in law, Max (Joyce) DeVore and Watson (Trudy) DeVore.

Lozo Micich

Lozo Micich, 91, of Charles City, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at home.

A funeral service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 902 5th Ave., in Charles City, on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Maureen Doherty officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. A visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. one hour prior to the service at the church. Lozo was born on March 12, 1919 in Charles City, the son of Luka and Julia (Kovacevich) Micich. After graduating from Charles City High School, he went to work at the munitions plant in Ankeny. He joined the United States Navy on November 11, 1942, and proudly served his country for three years during World War II. When he returned to Charles City after the war, he began working for Triangle Feed & Grain. Five years later, he went to work at Salsbury Laboratories, retiring in 1983 after 32 years. Lozo was united in marriage to Connie Tgiros on July 17, 1949 in Charles City.

Lozo was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture. He used his woodworking talents to enrich other people’s lives. He also spent a lot of time tending to his garden. He loved animals, whether he was watching deer or feeding the neighborhood strays. As a grandfather, Lozo enjoyed watching all of his grandson, Jacob’s activities. Lozo was a big sports fan. He liked following the high school softball games. Most of all, he loved being with his family and was especially proud of the apple of his eye, Jacob.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 61 years, Connie; children, Louis Micich of Charles City and Kimberly (Ken) Rasmussen of Mason City; grandson, Jacob Rasmussen of Cedar Falls attending UNI; sister, Dorothy Milich of Warren, MI; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, George, Mike and Bosco Micich; and sisters, Mary Walk and Andja Micich.
