Gertrude “Trudy” M. Street, 88 of 28 Cedar Terrace, Charles City, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt, Charles City. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul Phillips, of Floyd Gospel Lighthouse Church. Visitation will be from 5 until 8:00 pm, Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Gertrude May was born on July 7, 1923 at Clear Lake, Wisconsin the daughter of James and Olive (Hough) Knowlen. She received her education in Floyd and was so happy when she received her GED from NIACC in the 80’s. For many years she worked in the Rose Department at Sherman Nursery, later working as a nurses aid at the Riverside Chautauqua guest home. On November 26, 1946 she was united in marriage to Milton Niensteadt in Dubuque. In her early years she loved to fish and when catching was slow she liked to just sit and look at the water and surrounding beauty. She loved listening to music especially Gospel and Country Gospel. She camped with her family, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, and being active in her church at the Floyd Gospel Lighthouse Church. She was most content when she was with the little ones in her family, being at family reunions and just being around family. She was a fan of college football and basketball games.

Survivors include her son Gary Hedrick, Charles City; Roy Street, Hampton, Iowa; grandchildren Leslie Klemme, El Paso, TX; Milton Hedrick, California; Derek Hedrick, Charles City; Granddaughters Ila Cheney, Concordia, MO; Denise Guilory, California; Great Grandchildren Jesse, Bobby, and Tammy Cheney, Amy Delatte, David, Ryan, and Steven Klemme, Roel and Cassandra Lechuga, Great Great Grandchildren Chasidy, and Carson Cheney, Michael-aiden Chapa, Marquise Nance, Ashley and Andrew Guilory, and a nephew Jim Witherspoon.

Her husband, parents, step-father Andrew Bogart, Daughter Nola Vosburgh, Grandsons LaVerne and David Vosburgh, Brother William Knowlen, Sister Mildred Townsend, preceded her in death.

Maxine Ebel

Maxine Ebel, 69, of Toledo, Iowa, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street in Charles City with Pastor Jan Tjaden of the First Congregational Church of Orchard officiating. Maxine will be cremated following the service and burial will be in the Howardville Cemetery at a later date. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Maxine Lucille (Lockie) Ebel was born on February 26, 1942 on a farm three miles west of Floyd, Iowa, to Robert and Nellie (Shorey) Lockie. She was united in marriage to William Jr. Shafer on January 31, 1960. They were later divorced and she married Lee Ebel on July 22, 1969. She raised five boys of her own and her niece.

Maxine enjoyed playing card games of all types and went in for the kill when she did. She also liked to sew and play games on the computer. Most of all, she loved her family and was a stalwart at helping with the family reunion every year. She always had a smile on her face that could cheer up anybody. It was always a pleasure to see her.

She leaves behind her husband, Lee Ebel of Toledo, Iowa; three sons, Dennis Shafer of Michigan, William Shafer of Mason City and Jack Ebel of Manly; daughter, Rachel (B.J.) Halterman of Des Moines; three sisters, Shirley Decker of Floyd, Jean Underwood of Peru, Indiana and Sandra Burd of Mason City; brother, Delbert (Judy) Lockie of Cameron, North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert; and two sons, Douglas Shafer in 2007 and James Ebel in 2010.

Vivian Decker Quam

Vivian Decker Quam, 78, of Northwood, formerly of Floyd and Nashua, died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Vivian Quam will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. Pastor Karen Grandall will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Vivian Nelda Ida Kalke Decker Quam was born January 19, 1933, in Floyd County, the daughter of Milo and Viola (Kamin) Kalke. She graduated from Floyd High School. Vivian also attended North Iowa Area Community College and Iowa State University for income tax courses. On September 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Decker at Austin, Minn. Lloyd died on October 1, 1994. Vivian married Gaylen Quam on May 4, 1996 at Northwood. For many years Vivian was a tax consultant in Charles City and then at Northwood. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting people and working with numbers and math. Vivian was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Her interests included reading, sewing and canning. She sewed over 500 quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief. Vivian also enjoyed singing in the past with the choir at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd and was the soloist for many weddings at the Little Brown Church. She will always be remembered for her love of others and sharing life’s experiences with them.

Living family members include her husband, Gaylen Quam of Northwood; a daughter, Joy (Tom) Krieger of Nashua; three sons, Michael Decker of Sanborn, Russell (Wendy) Decker of Osage and Gene Quam of Northwood; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Foote, Jesse Krieger, Luke Decker, Matthew Decker, Justin Kadner, Josh Decker and Trevor Decker; 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Nona Smith of Dike; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lloyd.
