Darlene L. Mast


Darlene L. Mast, 79, of Charles City, died Wednesday morning, February 9, 2011, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for Darlene Mast will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Chaplain Sam Mack will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Darlene LaVonne Hook was born November 11, 1931, in Grundy County, the daughter of Ernest and Alice (Tjabring) Hook. She graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1949. In 1955, she was united in marriage to Dale Mast in Sioux Falls, S.D. and were later divorced. Darlene was employed as a waitress at Morg’s Café and Donna’s Café. She also was a plant worker at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for 12 years. Darlene taught Sunday school in Dubuque for many years and was a Foster Grandparent in the Charles City school system for 8 years. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Faith Circle. Darlene enjoyed reading, sending cards to people in church, visiting people in the nursing homes and delivering meals on wheels. She also was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Darlene devoted her life to family and others.

Living family members include her two daughters, Debra Lee (Andy) Weig of Castle Rock, Colo. and Dee Lana Kempton of Council Bluffs; four grandchildren, Nick Kempton, Kristina Kempton, Michelle Gulley and Kate Weig; brother, Arthur (Dorothy) Hook of Charles City; two sisters, Ann Cook of Ashton, Mo. and Leona “Candy” Watson of Vancouver, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons at birth; and two brothers, Frank Hook and Ernest Hook, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
