Archie Alan was born on July 22, 1914 in rural Floyd the youngest son of Robert Maurice and Effie May (Childs) Ingersoll. He attended rural schools and then graduated from Floyd High School in 1933, unusual at the time. He farmed for a few years and then worked in the foundry at Oliver/White Farm for 25 years until retiring in 1976. He very much enjoyed woodworking and fixing everything mechanical in his shop. Archie was a bike rider many years before Ragbrai was ever thought of and continued riding his bike until age 91. On June 17, 1945 he was united in marriage to Mildred Turner in Osage. They made their home in Charles City on 8th street after raising their children in rural Floyd. He was great with kids and was everybody’s “Archie Grandpa.” He always was taking kids fishing and camping and greatly enjoyed the social aspect. While farming one of his great pleasures was working with his horses. Archie looked forward to the family reunions and volunteering with the kids at the “Y”. He was active in his church and its bible school program. He also enjoyed music and was a self-taught harmonica player.
