Evelyn Johlas


Evelyn Johlas, 86, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Evelyn Johlas will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastors David Werges and Dennis Niezwaag will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Evelyn Irene Berding Johlas was born February 11, 1925, in Cerro Gordo County, the daughter of Gerhardt and Helene (Theilen) Berding. She graduated from Riceville High School. On February 12, 1945, she was united in marriage to Victor Johlas at Riceville. They farmed all their lives south of Charles City. Evelyn was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, church circle, Women of the Moose, Farm Bureau, Heritage Club and the Chat-A-Bit Club. She looked forward to playing bingo, dancing to polka music and going on trips with the Heritage Club.

Living family members include three children, Lyle Johlas of Shell Rock, Glenn (Nancy) Johlas of Charles City and John (Michelle) Johlas of Ogden, Ill; six grandchildren, Heather Johlas, Krystal Johlas, Kimberly (Brian) Watkins, Karen (Shawn) Szalkowski, Nathan Johlas and Hannah Johlas; two great grandchildren, Zachary and Alexis Watkins; a great great grandson, Isaiah Watkins; and a sister, Helen (William) Jorgensen of Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on January 29, 1992; a brother, LeeAnda Berding; and a sister, Rosaline Jorgensen.
