Wayne E. Swant


Wayne E. Swant, 94, of 300 N. Grand Ave, in Charles City, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A Funeral service will be held at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., in Charles City on Friday, August 26 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2:00 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City on Friday.

Wayne E. Swant was born August 4, 1917 in Charles City, IA the son of Amos H. and Emma M. (Wulff) Swant. He graduated from Colwell Consolidated High School, class of 1933. He was united in marriage to Mayme A. Meyers on March 6, 1939 in Charles City, IA. The couple had resided in Charles City for most all of their lives.

Wayne farmed in the community for over 42 years, until retiring in 1981. He was a member Elks and the Isaak Walton League, both in Charles City. Wayne served for 18 years on the Board of Directors for the Colwell CO-OP and was also the past president of the CO-OP. He served on the Midland District 12 Board in Minneapolis, MN. Wayne also was a member of the Moose Lodge in Charles City and served as the past Governor. He enjoyed fishing, traveling to Texas and Arizona, where he was a prospector and rock hound. In the early years of his life, Wayne played in a dance band known as the “Tune Tossers”. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Wayne will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Wayne’s life are his son, Ken W. (Connie) Swant of Charles City; his four grandchildren, Tammy (Dan) Elthon, Lori Phelps, Brad Swant and Terry Swant; six great grandchildren, Andy Elthon, Matt Elthon and fiancĂ©e, Angie Berger, Shaun Swant, Justin Swant, Nicholas Swant and Harley Jane Phelps and his sister, Dorothy L. Groesbeck of Osage, IA.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Emma Swant and his wife, Mayme A. Swant on February 8, 2002.
